UOI 6: The Eye Dissection

In science on the 9th of November we dissected an eyeball! (A cow eyeball) Apparently it is similar to the human eye except in human eyes there are a few extra muscles that help us move our eyes in more directions than cows.
We got to look at the different types of muscles an parts of the eye like the lens, sclera and the retina.

We were in groups of 3 and we took turns using the scalpel.

This is a picture of the retina. It kind of looks like a Paua (A New Zealand Shell)

It was a lot of fun, but many of us were squeamish so some of us didn't touch the eyes (I did!)

The Internet (Blog Action Day)

The internet has many problems concerning me, like common misconceptions, our heavy reliability on it and just idiots using it. There are many common misconceptions that stop people from using the internet to it's full extent. It IS safe is you can understand that it is.

You can earn lots of money online...                  NO YOU CAN'T! Of course you can make money online through advertising, but a lot of people are dragged into the ever so misleading binary options (It's like a stock market helper). It doesn't work properly, WOW I just got ten dollars! Worth the thousands I wasted to get to it. Making money online is not the way to go.

Also, many parent are concerned over their children get stalked or approached by sexual predators so the say "No Facebook, Instagram, Myspace (who even uses myspace) etc." Basically no social connection over the internet. Some people go as far as no internet at all. This is limiting a lot of things for children/teens. The fact is there is not as many sexual predators as you think there is. Not everyone you meet online is willing to find you and hurt you. A lot of people are actually great friends to get with (I have many international friends I have met on steam). If you get taught and even teach your self how to avoid the very very few harmful people on the internet. You are going to be safe.

Lastly, not everything is true. I'm sure a lot of you have been taught this before, but still many of us forget about this. Wikipedia. Super useful for exams and studying, but sometimes it is super unreliable. And no you are not going to die of a horrible disease because you are coughing. Or are you? (Seriously though)

Imagine this, Everything we need to live smoothly and keep us safe is on the internet, like crime databases, severely important documents and even power. And then. It just stops. The internet just stops. The world would be in a constant state of chaos. In fact this could be our world one day. It is scary to think if one thing falls, we fall with it. There is a lack of physical backups (as in paper) to keep us safe just in case. Power runs on schedules and a system used to keep stations running all on the internet. We should have manual systems for power. Hopefully we will maintain the internet to a standard where it won't collapse.

Some of you guys are idiots. The people who are on the internet just sending absolute hate to others, the stalkers and the hackers. What urges you to do these horrible things to this world? The internet is a resource we should use, but we use it for the better not the worse. Please just don't. I know most of you, if not all of you, reading this now, are not bad people.

The Internet is safe and fun, but some things/people prohibit that.

My Counter Argument to Myself?

As you would have seen from my last post I am not very mentally inclined to do blog posts, but I have finally found a topic that is: 1. Not boring 2. Fun to write and 3. Something I can write like I actually want to write it. So here is my counter argument on why blogging is beneficial! (Suggested by Miss Wihongi) I decided not to do a rebuttal for this, but I will in the future for later topics.

Blogging, as I have stated, has not been very beneficial to me that I have noticed, but there are the things I have not noticed that are beneficial. For example, I can express my thoughts to a large audience easily, blogging can be more fun if you write about something that interests you and there is a chance to get people to know you better. Blogging can be fun and beneficial if you put your mind to it.

Seven months ago my class entered the Student Blogging Challenge!
(http://studentchallenge.edublogs.org/) It was about teaching children and teens how to make a blog, write on a blog and comment on blogs in an effective fashion. Also, when you signed up, your name was in a list of hundreds of student with their own blogs to read about. This opened up the chance for people from all around the world to visit your blog! You can also comment on other peoples blogs and leave a link to your own blog. The person or persons will feel compelled to click on it because you made a wonderful comment! (and they won't if your comment sucked) Getting people around the world to see your work can open many of opportunities and most most of the time, opportunities are beneficial to oneself. Plus, It's easy!

Going back to the Student Blogging Challenge, we learnt a lot of different things! Like commenting on blogs to writing about things none of us actually cared about and nobody actually cared to read. I found this (along with many others) extremely boring. In a way, it might have put me off blogging in the first place. Now I have found something I can stand to write about! If you can find something that you would like to write about, then it can develop into a whole lot of fun! Blogging can be and should be fun and beneficial for you.

One of the many topics to write about on a blog is yourself. People love to get to know each other and that is a fact. No I don't mean what you did over the holidays (honestly, the least it can make me feel is jealousy and I don't want to be made jealous) I mean what you like to do and something interesting about yourself. I also want to get to know a funny story that happened to you. It's always good to get a laugh, even a small chuckle, out of someone. It will form a kind of connection between the two of you. This could lead to long-distance (and short-distance) friendships! A chain of comments could evolve and start an endless discussion, but only, if it is relatable and interesting. Having a overseas friend can be fun and it can be achieved through blogging if they just get to know you.

As I have stated blogging can be fun and beneficial to oneself if you try.

Yes, I still have better things to do then blogging, but I have chosen to write on this blog, because it is fun and beneficial for me.

Blogging and My Feelings Towards it

In my class we are made to make two blog posts a week which many of us are happy to do and enjoy it, but some of us do not have the same love for it and don't have the necessary equipment to do such a task. I should not have to be forced to do it in my own school class time where I could be doing a much more productive task and have fun while preforming it.

Mrs Hogg says that blogging's purpose is to show our writing to a large audience world-wide, but nobody really looks at my blog anyway and I don't want random people looking at my work. Yes I could advertise and get more views, but honestly, who cares about what I've done? My parents? I'll just show them in person. All the stuff we have to write is hideously boring so if I can't stand to write it, who is gonna stand to read it? It's pointless.

Not many people in our class actually like blogging (specifically the girls like it) so why should we be forced to do it if it doesn't have much of a benefit and we get zero fun out of it.

In a way I kind of enjoyed writing this post which goes against my words, but I'm expressing my hate towards it in a way I'm telling you my feelings not writing a stupid blog post. Want me to do 5 more posts? Sweet! More times to write about my feelings towards class. I know for a fact many people would find this post interesting so I hope you do. I know someone who will not.

I have better things to do then write a blog post.

Blog Audit

This is my audit of my blog!

I have written 20 posts (this is the 21st).

6 of the posts were school based, 3 for fun and 10 for student blogging (1 was just the welcome).

I received 5 comments from classmates, 3 from teachers and 4 from overseas students.

My profile had the most comments. I think this is because my profile is one of the things people will look for to get to know me. I put detail into it and people commented about my bad experience and my wish to become some kind of doctor!

I enjoyed writing about me the most because I like to express myself so this was an enjoyable and public way of saying so.

I haven't changed my blog theme since I started! I thin my current theme is pleasing to the eye and has a good mix of colors.

I have 1 fun widget, 1 counter widget and 3 blog widgets. I think this is just enough because I haven't gone wild with unnecessary widgets that are distracting.

I have used Easymosa for a professional looking mosaic picture, Jigsaw planet for a puzzle game of my mosaic and Travelers-point for a map with lines to show my travel trip!

My dad is my audit partner here is what he told me.

His first impressions were seeing heaps of information and a good color scheme.

He said he didn't notice anything too distracting.

The grey block background captured his eye, he said the 3D effect of it looked nice.

He told me that to improve my blog, I should add more pictures and videos to further increase peoples liking of my posts.

Food Tech UOI: Yo-nanas

Today in the Food Technology room, Natalie, James and us (Ethyn and Aryan) experimented making frozen fruit ice cream with the Yo-nanas fruit ice cream maker. We used bananas and a variety of berries to make a fresh, fruit soft-serve ice cream!

It was tasty and fresh. With the lack of sugar it was a healthy dish, it was made out of pure fruit and berry so it was very strong. It was a pinkish purple colour; it looked professional.

Image isn't working sorry!

Animals and us

(This is for the student blogging challenge!)

Animals. I love many types (Specifically Cats!) and many colours of them, but many today are neglected and mistreated leaving hostile and sick animals which can be a danger for those around.

I love little cuddly animals and animals which can be domesticated easily like cats and birds. I have two cats myself and they are cute little fur-balls! I also like birds even though I have never had one myself! I would hate to see any of my pets mistreated, but it is a daily problem!

In nearly every country a few animal are neglected or mistreated. They are either not fed, hurt intentionally, not given medical help, not loved, not given a safe shelter and sold on the black market for money. In many places where wild animals roam, there are bound to be poachers. Poachers are people who steal animal and sell them for hefty amounts of money. It is very illegal to poach.

Poachers steal many types of animals from tigers to hippopotamuses. They also kill them for things like trunks and claws. Diseases can also spread from killing then eating. Outbreaks of Ebola have been associated with eating ape meat. Poaching can leave little animals left and it can make it hard for animals to breed so the causing effect could mean many species.

These things happen in many countries so it is up to us to stop domestic (and not domestic) violence to animal. If you see somebody hurting an animal, see if you can step in, but if your not up to it (or it looks like you would soon be in the violence) call the police. It is illegal to hurt animals or steal them so don't even try!

Favourites

My Favorite Computer!

I'm sitting at my computer playing some games and then guess what? My computer breaks down! I restart my computer and keep playing. It crashes again! I go tell my dad and he say I should just deal with it. It happens again and again and again until it finally won't start again! This is devastating! I can't play games or do anything computer wise!

My dad said he would come in and fix it. So he comes and tries to turn it on. No luck. He hits my computer as hard as he can. I thought that would destroy it even more! Once again, no luck. So he says "We might have to get you a new one." This is great news! I have always wanted a new computer! I wish it could be better then my broken one. But... I have to wait till Christmas... well.

The wait was horrible. I had to use my mum's old laptop! It was terrible and hardly ran properly. But the day is today! Christmas morning! I couldn't wait to unbox my computer! I didn't want to have breakfast, I didn't want to watch other open their presents, I just want to get my computer! I finally get my turn to open presents... I open the big one and...  a computer case. This must have been a joke.
I try to hold in my rage and open my other presents. One by one pieces of a computer start to unwrap. And finally... a computer building toolkit. I'm going to build my own computer!

Here's a link for how to build your own and what you need!

If you could build a computer, what would you use it for?

Weather Poem!

This is a weather poem I made in class!

Do you like the wind?
It takes all the warmth out of your body and leaves you cold,
but blows your life in great directions.
It is the path.
Do you like the rain?
It soaks up your soul and leaves you wet,
but refreshes and gives life to those around.
It is the life giver.
Do you like the sun?
It fry's you up and leaves you burnt,
but gives you the conditions for fun and relaxation.
It is the fun.
Do you like the fog?
It blurs you vision and leaves you blind,
but when it clears, joy is revealed.
It is life's surprises.

Thing don't always seem nice at first,
but like the weather, It will always change.

Board Game History!

Hi!
Today I will be talking about the history of board games!
I hope you learn something.

Board game are used widely around the world and even in countries not available to the actual boards who draw their boards in the sand. Even though they are widely, not many people have learnt there origin.

The first ever recorded use of board games was over 7000 years ago found in Ur (Iran in 5500BC).
Many old games have been found in tombs like this one. Many important parents would bury their children (if they were deceased) in a tomb with their favourite toys and games.
The early Egyptians used mud gaming boards. A board and a peg was found in a tomb at about 2800BC shows to players with pegs. Dice were used in this game and it had a drawer with more pieces where they were stored.

Board game were used for entertainment and fun. Now a lot of board game are for championships and for some they are their life! If you go to a chess champs it is very interesting to see what happens! Chess is the oldest surviving game!

I hope you learnt some thing from this post!

New Horizons!

NEW HORIZONS!

Hi! Today I will be writing about my New Horizons trip I did last term!

The ride there is twisty and will quickly make anyone sick if you don't look straight forward, still, I continue to talk to the kids in the back. We talk about many things ranging from the latest pop songs to the cows passing by. We realize how unusual it is to have a studio in the middle of no where, but where assume that is what makes it unique. After what seemed like an hour drive, we finally arrive. A small house greets us.

My fingers smashing on the keyboard make wonderful sounds. All the sounds are collected in one computer where they are piled up to make a big heap of fine music. Singers are in the mute room, their instruments are their mouths. The Drummer is in the loud room where sounds are reflected off wall to prevent sounds from escaping in to outsiders ears. The Drummers instrument is their drums and sticks. The Guitarist's fingers pick and strings which wobble and shake, these sound are emitted from a speaker in to a mic that sends he sounds to the pile. The Guitarist's instrument is the strings. My instrument is the keys in which when pressed emit unique melody's.

A new set of children are in the car now. This time crazy and erratic. They poke there heads out the window shouting at passer-byes! And the laughing! Oh the laughing was enough to drive a grown man crazy! But luckily i am not a grown my and thought this was hilarious also. My dad on the other hand looked he was in a bubble that blocked out all sound; he looked like he couldn't hear a word!
This all had to end because we had reached our destination. Another two days of this? I've got a long ride ahead of me!

The Block Reflection

Around week 3, Aranui had a big event called "The Block". It was part of or unit of inquiry. "How we organize ourselves." It was a challenge event where we had multiple things to do to score points for our team of around ten people. They ranged from physical to mental and teamwork challenges.

We first, in our groups, had to answer questions based on random things. eg. Who directed the hobbit? Our team came last, but we were determined to push on.

Next we were told to set up our tents where we would eat our food and hang out whenever there wasn't a challenge. One of us had brought a gazebo so tried we put that up. Our team did NOT work well together! But, nevertheless or team came third which put us ahead.

Tug of war was next, but we knew we didn't have the strongest of people. we still tried anyway... we didn't win, but we didn't lose (we came 6th equal with everyone who lost, so technically we lost).

After break, which was normal snack food from our bags, one of the hardest challenges was coming up... the mental challenge... where we had to hold our backs against a wall with our feet in front like we were sitting on a chair that isn't there. We all had turns (whenever someone gave up, someone else would be beside them to take their position) and it was surprisingly hard; it was a defiantly test of mental skill. I'm not sure what place we came, but it wasn't last.

Then was my favorite bit, eating time! Our group had brought drinks, chips, Lamingtons, hot dogs and a lot of Oreos. We all had a go at the food. We thought that it wasn't going to last! When I was full there was still plenty of food. It all got chucked, but it was well worth it.

Our them had not the best people physical and teamwork wise, but we still fought on, but in the end our placing was...

Last.

It still was a great experience and was still great fun.

Zoom out

I found this photo of someone holding a phone.
I thought it would be an interesting topic to zoom out of.

This photo is off  Morguefile and can be used freely.
I hope you have some fun zooming out of this photo!
(if you dont know what zooming out is, it is an activity in the student blogging challenge where you add bits and pieces to the picture "zooming out". eg. John was about to call the police. (this could be the first comment.) There was an intruder. (next comment) and so on. this could go on forever until there are plenty of comment in which someone ends the story in a long paragraph manner.)

Jigsaw!

HI! I've made a jigsaw out of my mozaic photo and now you can play it!
This is part of the student blogging challenge (Activity 11).
Hope you have fun!

Literacy Review

http://www.kwarp.com/portfolio/grammarninja.html
This game is called "Grammar Ninja".

This game was fun to play and had multiple levels for people with low or higher knowledge of grammar.

This game was surprisingly fun for something about grammar!

This game is aimed at mostly children learning how to read/write with more advanced knowledge of words.

You need to know basic knowledge of grammar and how to read.

It could be made better by having a tutorial about how grammar works.

Thank you for reading my review

My Profile

Hello! My name is Ethyn and I live in the city of Hamilton!
I have many favourite hobbies like computing, music, trampolining and trying different things. I play the keyboard, a bit of guitar, MIDI controlling and most percussion. Most of the time when I'm in my room I'm on the computer. I can never keep track of how many things I'm doing on it, but it's always something that helps me or is fun for me and others. I also use my computer for researching homework. I go on my trampoline frequently and never get bored of it. I can't do many tricks, but when i do tricks they are always cool to me.

I have a wonderful family who I love. I have a mum and a dad, 4 grandparents (who spoil me greatly), no siblings which I kind of like because I'm not being annoyed (that's my dad's job), uncountable aunts, uncles and cousins (my favourite cousins are my mum's sister's kids). I have a huge family tree, but it a stop at me because I'm the only one at the bottom of my main surname tree.

Later in life i would love to be some kind of doctor, possibly a surgeon. I think I can live up to this dream if I try hard enough. I like the feeling helping someone in serious need.

I have a fear of bees and wasps; I always get paranoid around bush because I'm afraid a bee will fly out. Once I was on my scooter going down a hill, then out of no where a wasp (or some bee) fly's out and hover in front of me. I was scared it was going to sting me, so i tried to buzz it away, little did I know that there was a pothole in from of me, so my wheels fell into it and i flew over my handle bars scraping my whole legs and I had to work to school slowly. That was a bad experience!
